Muscat – Oman’s largest copper mining initiative, the Mazoon Copper Project, is shaping up to be a hallmark of environmental sustainability and strategic national value. Spearheaded by Mazoon Mining, a subsidiary of Minerals Development Oman (MDO), this flagship project is located in Yanqul in Al Dhahirah Governorate and is poised to play a transformative role in the Sultanate’s mining landscape.
Set to commence operations in 2027, the project aims to produce approximately 115,000 tonnes annually of 21.5% copper concentrate, reinforcing Oman’s position on the global copper map.
Speaking with Oman General Radio, Mattar bin Salim al Badi, CEO of MDO, highlighted that sustainability lies at the heart of the project. “The Mazoon Project was designed with environmental responsibility at its foundation,” he stated. A key innovation in the project’s design is the use of dry stacking—a modern, eco-conscious method for managing mine waste. This technique notably reduces water usage and lowers emissions, thereby aligning with Oman’s broader environmental goals while boosting investor confidence in Oman as a credible, sustainable copper producer.
Despite being the largest copper project in Oman in terms of production capacity and investment scale, Al Badi noted that by global standards, the Mazoon Copper Project is not classified as a large-scale initiative. However, what it may lack in global scale, it makes up for in strategic significance.
“The true value of this project lies in its role in elevating Oman’s position among countries exporting this critical mineral,” Al Badi emphasized. With global competition for copper intensifying—especially as it becomes vital to energy transition technologies—the project positions Oman as a meaningful player in the global copper supply chain.
Earlier in 2025, Mazoon Mining secured RO 104 million in funding from a consortium of local and regional banks, further cementing confidence in the project’s feasibility and long-term impact.
As Oman continues to prioritize sustainable development across industries, the Mazoon Copper Project stands as a beacon of environmentally responsible mining, economic diversification, and strategic resource development.
